Looking After Your Mental Health: 5 Tips From Our Therapist Partners

Caring for your mind matters just as much as caring for your body. At Comfrt, that belief is close to our heart—we've always seen comfort as a form of self-care, made up of the small, gentle choices that help you feel grounded and a little more like yourself.

So we're sharing simple tips for looking after your mental health, advice from two of our partner therapists, and the resources and causes we support year-round. Take what serves you, and be gentle with yourself along the way.

Why caring for your mind matters

Mental health is something we all share. It's not just for those in crisis—it's for anyone navigating the everyday weight of being human. The more we talk about it openly, the more we break down stigma and remind each other that no one has to carry it all alone.

Words of advice from Comfrt's therapist partners

We spoke with two of our partner therapists: Payton Larsen, LMFT, an EMDR therapist who believes healing happens not just in the mind but in the body too, and Kazia Elizabeth Cumbler, AMFT, co-founder of The People Place LA, a community space she lovingly calls "doulas for parents."

Here's what they shared (consider this wisdom to lean on, not a substitute for professional care).

1. Start with your body when your mind feels like too much.

When you're overwhelmed, both therapists point to the same quiet superpower: your senses. Payton suggests "changing the channel" for your nervous system: "Pause, breathe, label: stop what you're doing, take a breath, and simply name what you're feeling."

If you're really spiraling, a splash of cold water or a step into fresh air can act like a hard reset. Kazia points to the tool we always carry with us: our breath. "By consciously slowing the breath, we signal to the body that we are safe and in control," she says.

2. Your environment is talking to you.

Our bodies are always scanning our surroundings for cues of safety, Payton reminds us. If a space leaves you drained, that's worth noticing. "Choosing soft textures and calming lighting isn't just 'decorating,' it's telling your nervous system it is safe to relax."

3. Know the difference between numbing and soothing.

Not all "self-care" leaves us feeling cared for, and the tell, Payton says, is how you feel afterward. "If you feel more drained after the activity, you're likely numbing. If you feel more 'put back together,' you're soothing."

4. Set yourself up for the hard days.

For example, Mondays can hit some of us like a wall, and Kazia says the fix starts the night before. "Making sure you have a good routine and sleep hygiene the evening before the work week is always a great idea," she says. "Have a healthy dinner and get to sleep early without watching screens right before bedtime—it's always a great way to set yourself up for success!"

5. Know when to reach out.

Friends are vital, but sometimes venting isn't enough. Payton offers a simple gut check: "Is this conversation circular? If you find yourself venting about the same issue repeatedly without feeling resolved, a professional can help you break the loop."

How Comfrt supports mental health awareness

Mental health isn't just a one-day conversation for us—it's woven into everything we do. Over on Instagram, our Daily Comfrt posts share little affirmations and reminders to carry with you, because sometimes the right words at the right moment make all the difference. Come follow along.

We also believe in backing that up with action. We're proud to donate to more than four mental health non-profit organizations, such as Active Minds, JED, ADAA, and NAMI that are doing the real work of making support more accessible to everyone who needs it.

And because comfort can be part of caring for yourself, our Clinicians' Choice products feature pieces such as the Dreamer Blanket or Weighted Hoodie, chosen with wellbeing in mind: soft, grounding, and made to help you feel a little more at ease on the hard days.

A gentle reminder

However you're feeling, know this: small steps count, and you don't have to do it all at once. Caring for your mind is a practice, not a performance, and whatever today holds, you're not alone in it.
